MP3, MP4 Players – Podcasts for Beginners

If you've just invested in MP3 or MP4 players, it can be a bewildering, but exciting, new world.

MP3 and MP4 players give you access to thousands of inner worlds. On MP3 or MP4 players,  you can play music to enhance your mood or get you through the working day; listen to uplifting beats in the gym; listen to your favourite audio book on a long train journey; catch up on your favourite radio show on the move, and with MP4 players, you can even watch the funniest YouTube clips. But you can only have these worlds at your fingertips if you master the art of podcasts and downloads.

MP3 and MP4 Players: Podcasts Explained

To make the most out of your MP3 and MP4 players, you need to set up your computer to receive podcasts. First off, you need to install podcast software onto your computer. This isn't difficult – it is usually free and set-up guides for new software take you through a step-by-step process. Popular software includes iTunes, Juice and Doppler. If you Google podcast software, you'll be taken in the right direction. This software will then allow you to look online to find the episodes (or podcasts) you want, automatically delivering the podcasts to your computer.

Subscribing to Podcasts for MP3 and MP4  Players

Depending on what software you've opted for, you can then subscribe to the podcasts you want – for example if you have iTunes, you can browse the iTunes Podcast Directory. Any other software usually demands that you add the podcast feed to your software. The feed is the address of the podcast – your software goes to this address to check for new episodes. The feed address is easy to find – for example if you want to download a BBC podcast, you are directed to click on a yellow 'Podcast' button, which will launch the feed address into your internet (you need to be online). You then add or subscribe this address to your software.

MP3 or MP4 Players: What Next?

Your software will then automatically download new episodes as they become available onto your computer. You can then simply transfer it to your MP3 or MP4 players. For audio, MP3 players are sufficient, but if you are expecting video too you'll need to have an MP4. This simple process means you can have your favourite radio shows on tap and at your fingertips without having to remind yourself to tune in!
